The Subscribers Ask...

CSRF Newsletters

The Construction Sciences Research Foundation, Inc. actively encourages feedback from SPECTEXT® subscribers as part of the ongoing review and development process for future editions of the SPECTEXT® Libraries. The following is a sampling of the questions we receive at the CSRF Support Center. If you have a question you would like answered, please contact the CSRF Support Center at 1-877-SPECTXT (toll-free), Fax: 410-420-2749, or by E-mail:supportcenter@csrf.org.

Q. The content of Section 15180 - Heating and Cooling Piping seems to duplicate Section 15105 - Pipes and Tubes. How should we use these sections to avoid confusion?

A. Section 15180 was written as a system specification for HVAC heating and cooling systems. The intent was to include all the components necessary for hydronic heating and cooling systems in a single section. This approach parallels other specification sections in Division 15 written as a systems approach, such as for domestic water, sanitary waste and vent, and storm drainage piping.

Section 15105 was written intending to consolidate all piping materials into a single section for use with various piping systems. The current edition of Section 15105 is causing confusion because it appears to duplicate most of the information in Section 15180. We recommend subscribers use the system specifications, Sections 15140, 15150, 15160, and 15180 to specify plumbing and HVAC piping systems for now.

Reorganization of the piping sections is under consideration for future editions of SPECTEXT®. We are exploring the possibility of offering two separate groups of sections, one based on systems, and one based on materials, to better accommodate the various ways our subscribers specify projects. It is anticipated that this new approach will give SPECTEXT® subscribers more flexibility in specifying plumbing, HVAC, and process piping systems. The pipe materials could be specified once and then, scheduled by system or referenced from systems sections. By using the systems sections, all piping components could be specified with each required system.

Q. Is there an easy method to integrate changes we made in SPECTEXT98® into SPECTEXT® 99 other than manually copying the changes from one file to another?

A. Yes. One of the quickest ways to copy text from your SPECTEXT®98 into SPECTEXT®99 is to use the Document Compare features of your word processing software. Instructions on using this feature are readily available in your Corel WordPerfect or Microsoft Word user manuals and Help screens. The CSRF Support Center also provides current subscribers with instructions on how to use these features in all of the PC word processing formats we support. This information was included in the Mid-1999 Update package sent to subscribers in July 1999. Current subscribers may obtain a free copy of these instructions by contacting the Support Center at or 410-838-7561 or toll-free at 1-877-SPECTXT (773-2898).

Q. Will Drawing Coordination Considerations be included in future versions of SPECTEXT®?

A. Yes! CSRF will be reintroducing updated DCCs for Divisions 1 - 14 in the first release of SPECTEXT® 2000 to be published in January 2000. CSRF will be introducing DCCs for Divisions 15 and 16 in a future edition of SPECTEXT®.

Q. Will CSRF publish versions of the SPECTEXT® Libraries for Microsoft Office 2000 and Corel WordPerfect 9.0 for WordPerfect Suite 2000?

A. Yes! Subscribers may use the SPECTEXT®99 Libraries and editing macros in Microsoft Office 2000 and WordPerfect 9.0 with ease. As with past versions of WordPerfect, macros written in previous versions of WordPerfect are upwardly compatible with new versions of the program. Word 2000 users may use the editing macros in the SPECTEXT®99 Word 97 version, but a new macro security feature in Word 2000 requires a minor adjustment in settings to accommodate the Word 97 macros. More information on this may be obtained from the CSRF Support Center.
